Dr Di Wang will be the Departmental Lecturer in History of Art at Lincoln College for 2021-22.
Di received her DPhil from Oxford, where she was a recipient of the Khoan Sullivan Scholarship in Chinese Art. Her research challenges conventional narratives about the art of early twentieth-century China in relation to the Western art-historical canon, revealing the interconnections between aesthetic pursuits and epistemological modes in the construction of modern Chinese subjects.
Her first book project, Anatomical Visions and Revolutionary Bodies, builds on her doctoral research and explores how the epistemic images of human anatomy and the visual world of evolutionary theories shaped conceptions of the ‘body’ in art and medicine. It offers the first history of how the body was scientifically assessed and artistically represented across different visual media in Modern China.
Di has curated at Cai Studio in New York and the Timothy Taylor Gallery, and managed an international portfolio of exhibitions for the artist Cai Guo-Qiang. She received the W.H. Pembroke prize for her curatorial work at Pembroke College, Oxford. Di will be teaching Painting and Culture in Ming China and Contemporary Art from East Asia.
